R999 ppsJohannesburg & Soweto Day Tour
Stuck in Johannesburg and can’t think what to do? Experience this vibrant city first-hand with a very knowledgeable guide. On the way to Soweto this tour passes the National Football Stadium (built for the 2010 football World Cup) and we’ll stop in Diepkloof, with its many stalls selling Southern African craft and more. In Orlando West we visit Vilakazi Street, passing the former homes of Nelson Mandela (optional visit) and former Archbishop Desmond Tutu and learn about the Soweto uprising on June 16, 1976. Regina Mundi, South Africa’s largest catholic church and a focal point of anti-Apartheid resistance is also visited before continuing on to one of the largest hospitals in the world, Chris Hani Baragwanath Hospital. Lunch is not included but this can be arranged. The well-known Apartheid Museum is up next, which provides interesting perspectives into South African history before 1994.
On to Johannesburg itself, we pass through Braamfontein, Hillbrow, the Central Business District and the Telkom tower before stopping for a tour at South Africa’s Constitutional Court (when not in session), built on a prison that once held Mandela and Gandhi. On our way to Newtown we drive on the architecturally-acclaimed Nelson Mandela bridge. At Mary Fitzgerald Square you can walk on the Jazz Walk of Fame. We end this tour with a visit to the Carlton Centre, also known as the Top of Africa, the tallest building on the continent. A lift zooms up 50 stories for a 360-degree view of Johannesburg, sprawling in all directions this economic heart of South Africa and the region.
